PAUL S. FLORES

El escritor, actor , y productor de teatro Paul S. Flores trabaja principalmente con temas de transnacionalidad y ciudadanía. Crea obras y narraciones orales que estimulan y apoyan los movimientos sociales que conducen al cambio. La obra de Flores, "On the Hill: I Am Alex Nieto" (2017) reunió a las comunidades de San Francisco divididas por la gentrificación y la violencia policial. La capacidad de Flores
para pintar imágenes vívidas desde la experiencia bicultural latina está formada por su experiencia personal al crecer cerca de la frontera con México. Flores comenzó a presentar spoken word como miembro fundador de Youth Speaks y Los Delicados en 1996. Desde entonces presentaba sus obras en Def Poetry on HBO, The Nuyorican Poets Café, Pregones Theater, La Peña Cultural Center, El Centro Su Teatro, Gala Theater, Cara Mia Theater, Miami Light Project, Los Angeles Theater Center, y varias veces en La Habana, México, y El Salvador. Su amplio trabajo aborda la historia de los inmigrantes en toda su complejidad, desde la violencia —la migración forzada, la vida de pandillas, la guerra, el encarcelamiento, las familias separadas— hasta las relaciones intergeneracionales y la lucha por preservar los valores culturales. La obra más reciente de Flores, "Tenemos Iré/We Have Iré,” se estrenó en 2019 en Yerba  Buena Center for the Arts en San Francisco y fue de gira a nivel nacional. Flores es profesor adjunto de teatro en la Universidad de San Francisco. Es el autor del nuevo libro de poesia “We Still Be: Poems y Performances” publicado por El Martillo Press en Junio 2023.

(ENGLISH) Writer/ Actor/ Producer Paul S. Flores is one of the most influential Latino performance artists in the country and a nationally respected arts educator. He creates plays, oral narratives, and spoken word about transnationality and citizenship that spur and support societal movements that lead to change. Flores’ ability to paint a vivid picture of the bi-cultural Latino experience is shaped by his personal background and experience growing up in Chula Vista, California, near the Mexican border. His body of work touches on the immigrant
story in all its complexities: from the violent—forced migration, gang life, war, incarceration, and separated families—to zooming in on intergenerational relationships and the struggle of preserving important cultural values. As a San Francisco artist of Mexican and Cuban-American heritage, Paul S. Flores has built a national reputation for interview-based theater. He integrates Latino and indigenous healing practices to tell the stories of real people impacted by immigration and systemic inequalities. Flores’ work has played across the United States and internationally in Cuba, Mexico, and El Salvador. Paul is a Doris Duke Artist Award winner and an inaugural NALAC Catalyst
for Change awardee. His commissions have come from Creative Capital, La Peña Cultural Center, MACLA, MAP Fund, Pregones Theater, National Performance Network, Su Teatro, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and many more. Flores teaches Theater at
the University of San Francisco. He is the Principal Investigator for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research and arts project “Somos Esenciales” in San Francisco. He is the author of We Still Be: Poems and Performances (2023) on El Martillo Press.
