'An industry that will never disappear' [English version below]
Las labores del hogar han sido asignadas a las mujeres por siglos. Pero en pleno siglo XXI, cuando las publicidades empiezan tímidamente a mostrar hombres limpiando y haciendo otras tareas del hogar, aún queda por discutir la cuestión de clase. Y más increíblemente postergada, queda la garantía de derechos básicos de las trabajadoras del hogar y cuidadoras.
Si no ponemos voluntariamente el foco en el tema ‘trabajo doméstico’, especialmente cuando lo realiza alguien contratado y externo al hogar, no podremos darnos cuenta lo rudimentario (o incluso, inexistente) del estado en el que se encuentra la legislación de esta industria en la mayoría de los países. Como dicen líderes de la CA Domestic Workers Coalition, ‘es una industria que nunca desparecerá’ y necesita ser regulada.
Ojalá que el teatro y otras disciplinas artísticas, sigan visibilizando las inequidades y abusos que este sistema inflige en trabajadoras del hogar, niñeras y cuidadoras de personas enfermas y envejecidas. Pero también celebremos sus logros, y valoremos lo vital de su rol en toda sociedad.
Apoyemos su lucha. Informémonos y actuemos en consecuencia. Que la ignorancia y el argumento de lo sacrosanto de la propiedad privada y el privilegio de clase no sean más importantes que la garantía de sus derechos básicos.

Housework has been assigned to women for centuries. But in the 21st century, when advertisements timidly begin to show men cleaning and doing other housework, the question of class still remains to be discussed. And most incredibly, the guarantee of basic rights for domestic workers and caregivers remains overdue.
If we do not voluntarily focus on the issue of 'domestic work', especially when it is done by someone hired and outside the home, we will not be able to realize how rudimentary (or even non-existent) the state of legislation for this industry is in most countries. As Marta Herrera and Marta Garrido, leaders and activists of the CA Domestic Workers Coalition, say, “it is an industry that will never disappear” and it needs to be regulated.
I hope that theater and other artistic disciplines continue to make visible the inequities and abuses that this system inflicts on domestic workers, nannies, and caregivers of the sick and the elderly. But let's also celebrate their achievements, and appreciate the vitality of their role in our society.
Let's support their fight. Let's educate ourselves and act accordingly. So that ignorance, the sanctity of private property, and class privilege, should not be more important than the guarantee of their basic rights.
